We all start somewhere

We started investing in real estate in 2020 with our primary home. I had just graduated from my Infectious Disease fellowship during the height of COVID-19, and I was scared. I saw many physicians get furloughed, therefore our once "stable" job was not so stable anymore. The ones who had to remain on the "front lines" were over worked, burdened, and underpaid. Yes we were hailed "heroes" and given free food (lol!) but at what cost? That was when I started searching for more, asked more questions and started to look for other physicians who were doing different things. Then I stumbled onto taking courses. We took a real estate course, which was the first time I ever took a course that was not going to earn me a degree. From then on, I took more real estate courses diving into different strategies.

Fast forward to 4 years later, our rental portfolio has grown. Unfortunately, the medical field is still fraught with politics, angst against hospital administration, and physicians experiencing reverse inflation. If I had not taken that first step in 2020, I would probably feel stuck, discouraged, and burned out. However, now I have a choice. Now I know that we can create another source of significant income. Being a physician is not the only skill I have. To know that I am just a few more properties away from practicing medicine the way I want to brings relief and gratitude for the scared Jolie from 2020. I am grateful to her for taking that first step.

For the record, I have no intention of leaving medicine completely and becoming another real estate investor. I love my profession, I love being an infectious disease physician - however, the only way to sustain this and remain fulfilled is to invest in other asset classes. To me, I chose real estate investing.
